My debt was sold to a collection agency. How does this affect my credit report?

When your debt is passed from your original creditor to a collection agency or from one collection agency to another, it does not impact how long the debt can stay on your credit report. The original date of last activity stays and does not reset or change when another debt collection agency takes ownership.

However, keep in mind that making any payments on debt owed to collection agencies will likely update the date of last activity. This will often extend how long your debt is collectable under the statue of limitations laws as well as how long the collections account remains on your credit report.
