Can I have negative information (e.g., late payements) from closed accounts removed from my credit report?

No, not as long as the negative information is still timely. Whether your account is open or closed, negative information including late payments, paid collections accounts, and other entries will stay on your credit report for seven years (or longer, in cases of unpaid tax liens and some bankruptcies).
