How long will tax liens stay on my credit report?

Tax liens are a special case for how long they can remain on your credit report. Generally, tax liens will remain on your credit report indefinitely as long as they remain unpaid.

Paid tax liens will stay on your credit report for seven years from the date they are paid.

IRS tax liens that meet certain conditions may be eligible to be withdrawn and removed from your credit report once they are paid or in repayment. This request can be filed using IRS Form 12277.

State tax liens are handled differently with regulations determined separately from IRS rules.
